Received bad news? Can’t see how anything good can come of it? Well, the truth is there is always some positives to be found in the negative.Seriously, you’ve just got to be able to change your view on the situation!
‘There is always good news wrapped up in bad news’.
-Frank Delaney
So, if you’re wondering about how I deal with bad news, I deal with it like everyone else, probably pretty miserable about it at first have a little moan and grump about it, but I’ve learned that it’s all a part of deal and best thing to do is not let it consume you!
That being said, let me tell you about my own challenges recently with (what I think is) some pretty bad news. I’ve been having issues with my shoulder for over a year now, back, and forth from the doctors, physiotherapist etc etc etc.
For some of you reading, shoulder pain might seem minor, maybe not even worth mentioning, for me thought it’s been pretty rough. I’ve not been able to train properly (which is a massive part of my life, physically and mentally), sleep has been affected on regular basis and it’s been weighing pretty heavy on me and my moods. So, I decided to go see a specialist and found out I might need surgery. Shit…
At the time this was BAD NEWS, it means the training I was doing would stop, I would be off work, I’m getting married so I’ve been worried about if my proposed surgery might affect that! I saw all the negatives. Then after thinking about it and talking it out, I saw all the GOOD that could come of my bad news. A healthy shoulder, pain free (eventually),getting back to the training I love doing and just getting back to having abetter day to day. I might not even need it, I just let the bad news steam rollme at first, but I rained it back and got back in the driver’s seat and took control of the narrative.
By just shifting my mindset slightly I gained a whole new perspective of what I initially treated as bad news! Now some news I pretty earth shattering, I’m not naïve, but even the worst news can have positives. SomethingI want you to go away and do today, is think about three things in your life where something negative has happened, bear with me I’m not trying to make you cry, I want you to think about what came of them situations and how they would of lead to some positives.
So in the first newsletter I had an open offer of trying to create a habit or drop a bad habit within 21 days! I wanted to just check in and see how you was getting on? Good, I hope, but it’s okay if not. The important thing is to be able to make note of when something is not going well and what you can do to change It.
The Goal I set myself was not to have a takeaway for the whole of January, pretty pleased to tell you all that I did it. Not that I was eating takeaway every night, it was just a weekend treat. I just wanted to see if I could do and save some money in the process. I have stopped now forever? No,Ill still be getting my extra hot garlic chicken tikka Balti just not as much as i once was!
Let me know how you are getting on, drop me message on social media (links below) I’d love to hear what your challenge was and why you decided to choose that one!
So, I hope you all got a chance to check out last week’s recommendations. Im not expecting you have read a full book, but I hope you could check it out! If you missed last weeks, check it out HERE.
Here is what we suggest this week:
1. Mindset by Dr Carol Dweck. I think this is a great book, although it isa bit fluffy and could be shorter, the content within it is fantastic. Truly isa eye opener about the human brain and the power of the type of mindset we have!
2. Meaningful Money. Now this is a slightly different one, this youtube channel and book were made by man called Pete Matthews who is a financial advisor and honestly makes sense of money better than most! Its UK based information which I always found hard to come across when I was first looking into getting better with my money.
3. The subtle art of not giving a f*ck podcast – What everyone gets wrong about mental health (ft Lori Gotttlieb). Mark Mason is someone who I've mentioned before in these articles, I am massive fan of his work and this podcast is definitely thought provoking.

I mentioned it earlier I want you think about a time when you have had a bad time or bad news and really think about the hours, days, weeks or months after that event and see what positives came of it, there is also things coming up that you can see the positives in, like myself and the news I talked about above!
Find THREE events that you would deem not ideal or bad andsee how many positives you can find that will come from it or have come from itin the past.
Always aim for progress not perfection…
As always, to your success and growth,
Jack
